In the second semester with Hussein Chalayan in collaboration with MIT in Boston, we continued development of garments that interact with the environment and the wearer. I further developed the concept of wood that moves in reaction to water, incorporating movement into a cape covered with knitted pieces inspired by barnacles and mushrooms. The shapes slowly transform from flat and monochromatic to curled pieces with pops of color.
APPLIED DESIGN - INTELLIGENT SKIN
In this class with Hussein Chalayan and in consultation with MIT Boston, we were to create a prototype that interacts with the user.
Inspired by naturally venting fabrics created at MIT, I wanted to see if natural materials could be employed to create movement in response to moisture. I worked with wood veneer place on a wool jersey. The wood pieces were laser cut in the form of a cedar leaf.
The final prototype was a dress with cut vents that are lifted by the wood veneer pieces.
